Visual discovery and Your Vibe

Visual discovery gives shoppers ways to find products without relying only on words. VIBE supports product-to-product similarity, saved products and recommendation boards, and shopper-uploaded image search.

1Start visuallyUse a product card or upload a shopper image.
2MatchVIBE compares the selected visual signal with indexed product images.
3ExploreReview similar products and move between related styles.
4SaveThe Taste action stores a product in the current browser.
5ReturnYour Vibe shows saved items and related recommendation boards.

Visual discovery depends on an active image profile and completed image indexing.

These features require image embeddings to be ready. Image search and exact image matching quality also depend on the image sources selected in the active search profile.

Open VIBE admin > Sync and Index > Configuration.

The Search profile status card should report that the profile is ready. Review the Images badge.

If images are off, visual actions cannot use the catalog image index.

Product photos are the primary visual identity for matching. Choose the image position or supported metafield source that best represents the product.

Good sources:

  • A clean primary product photo.
  • A consistent catalog image position.
  • A dedicated product metafield containing the intended search image.

Avoid a source that mixes packaging, logos, size charts, and product photos unpredictably.

Variants use their own variant photo when Shopify provides one.

Context photos are optional lifestyle, model, room, detail, or use-case images.

Use them when context is important to similarity, such as furniture in a room or clothing on a model. Keep the product-photo source focused on the product itself.

Changing the source changes what must be indexed. Allow the resulting sync to complete before judging visual results.

Open VIBE admin > Explore mode > Product card actions.

  1. Turn on Similar.
  2. Turn on Taste.
  3. Confirm the controls are not plan locked.
  4. Open the storefront and inspect a VIBE product card.

The actions can appear in search, Explore, quick results, and related VIBE product surfaces where the selected card mode supports them.

The shopper selects Similar on a product card.

VIBE:

  1. Uses the selected product as the visual seed.
  2. Opens the Similar result state.
  3. Shows a seed chip so the shopper can see which product started the search.
  4. Returns visually related products.
  5. Lets the shopper remove the seed and return to normal Search.

Normal price or newest sorting does not apply to visual similarity. Results are ordered by their match to the seed.

Use Find similar for catalogs where shoppers compare:

  • Shape or silhouette.
  • Color composition.
  • Pattern.
  • Material appearance.
  • Furniture or interior style.
  • Art or visual theme.

It is less useful when product photos do not show the differentiating feature.

The star or save action adds a product to Your Vibe.

Saving does not immediately replace the current search. It updates the shared saved-product state across VIBE surfaces.

Saved products:

  • Are stored per shop in the shopper’s browser.
  • Are ordered with the newest save first.
  • Are limited to 48 products.
  • Update across tabs in the same browser.
  • Are not tied to a Shopify customer account.

Because saves use browser local storage, clearing browser site data, using a different browser, or using a different device produces a different saved list.

The shopper opens the Your Vibe tab.

The empty state explains that no favorites have been saved and provides an Explore products action.

The Your Favorites section shows saved products. A shopper can:

  • Open a product.
  • Remove it from favorites.
  • Open the complete favorites view.
  • Save more products from other VIBE surfaces.

VIBE creates boards of related products based on saved items. The shopper can:

  • Review a board.
  • See which favorites the board is based on.
  • Select Show more.
  • Open a larger related result set.
  • Return to all favorites.
  • Move from the board to Explore when the desired product is not present.

Recommendation boards can take a moment to populate after the saved list changes.

Where enabled, selecting a product in a Taste context can open a product popup. The popup can provide:

  • Product image and title.
  • Navigation between products.
  • Save to Your Vibe.
  • Go to product.
  • Show more products.
  • Add to cart when the product and variant data allow it.

Test add-to-cart on products with one variant and products with several variants. The final behavior can depend on the product and theme data available to the popup.

Image search requires Pro or Enterprise.

  1. Open Sync and Index > Configuration.
  2. Confirm image matching is on and image vectors are indexed.
  3. Turn on Search by image.
  4. Open Appearance and confirm the tested surface uses a VIBE-owned search bar.
  5. Test both quick search and the full search page.

VIBE tracks quick-search and search-page availability separately in the storefront configuration, even when the admin action enables the feature across surfaces.

  1. Select Image search.
  2. Upload a JPG or PNG.
  3. Review the selected-file state.
  4. Select Search similar items.
  5. Review the returned products.
  6. Select the image chip to review or replace the image.
  7. Remove the image to clear the visual query.

The uploaded image is used for the active visual request. Closing the overlay clears that image-search state.

For a well-prepared visual catalog:

  • Similar results share visible qualities with the seed product.
  • Saving a product updates its star state everywhere in the open browser.
  • Your Vibe shows saved items after reopening search.
  • Related boards reflect the current saved list.
  • Image search returns products that visually resemble the uploaded item.
  • Removing a seed or uploaded image returns the shopper to the normal search state.
  1. Choose a product with a distinctive image.
  2. Select Similar.
  3. Confirm the seed chip identifies the correct product.
  4. Review the first results for visible similarity.
  5. Remove the seed.
  1. Save a product from Search.
  2. Open Explore and confirm the same product shows as saved.
  3. Open Your Vibe and confirm it is first in Favorites.
  4. Remove it.
  5. Reload the page and confirm it remains removed.
  1. Save two products.
  2. Close and reopen the storefront in the same browser.
  3. Confirm both remain.
  4. Open a private window and confirm it has a separate list.
  1. Upload a clean product photo.
  2. Confirm a visual result set appears.
  3. Repeat with a lifestyle photo.
  4. Try an unsupported file and confirm a clear error appears.
  5. Remove the image and run a normal text query.
  1. Check the selected product-photo and context-photo sources.
  2. Confirm the source contains the expected image for the weak product.
  3. Confirm a sync completed after the image-source choice.
  4. Compare several products, not only one.
  5. Use consistent primary images where possible.
  6. Avoid judging similarity from titles alone.
  7. Contact support with the seed product URL, returned products, and screenshots when the mismatch is systematic.

Check the plan and the visual-action embedding status. Growth or higher is required, and the catalog must have usable image embeddings.

Confirm the related action is on, the plan allows it, and the product-card surface supports the action. A theme-owned native card can expose fewer VIBE controls than a VIBE-rendered card.

Your Vibe uses browser local storage. Saves do not follow the shopper to another device or browser and can be removed when site data is cleared.

Confirm the shopper is on the same shop domain and browser. Try another save and reopen the Your Vibe tab. Browser privacy settings can block local storage.

Confirm Pro or Enterprise, image vectors indexed, Search by image enabled, and a VIBE-owned search bar. The camera is not inserted into the theme’s native search bar.

Use a JPG or PNG. If a phone supplied another format, export or convert it to JPG or PNG and try again.
